Since its official inauguration in 1961, the Sursock Museum has organized and presented eighty-four exhibitions. These occasional events represent the main activity of the museum. Their list (published in chronological order-in the Retrospective section) demonstrates the vitality of a varied program whose guidelines, firmly set in the first days, are still followed.
Thus, the traditional Fall Exhibition, launched in 1961 and dedicated to Lebanese painters and sculptors, is still held each year. Twenty-two Exhibitions have followed one another since 1961, confirming and revealing talents in various fields of expression.
By giving the artists the possibility of presenting their latest creations in a stimulating confrontation, the Exhibition offers the public the opportunity to follow and appreciate the evolution of the fine arts in Lebanon.
A selection jury (open to Lebanese artists and foreign artists established in Lebanon) reinforced by traditional masters, young contemporaries, different prizes and acquisitions, has established this Exhibition as one of the
major events of the country's artistic life, in spite of stormy behind the scene talks, controversies and inevitable protests.
Nonetheless, its most important victory resides in the numerous visits of young people, school and university students led by their teachers, who swarm over the museum day after day during six weeks. It is worth mentioning in this respect that the Sursock Museum has organized educational exhibitions intended for young people ever since the beginning.
The collections were made by the Unesco and consisted of 750 reproductions of world-famous master-pieces. They allowed the setting-up of the first imaginary museum in Beirut in 1957.
