The
Library of the museum, separated from the lounge by a door,
is open to researchers and safeguards a few treasures. It is
possible to consult for example - with a special
authorization - the Koran of Hamburg in its first Arabic
edition dating back to 1694. The eighty-four page preface
written in
Latin by the |
editor,
Abraham Hickelmann, is particularly interesting
for the study of the early stages of modern orientalism.
This rare book was
acquired by the Sursock Museum in 1975, together with Le
Jay's "Polygot", the famous Bible published
in Paris in 1645 in ten folio volumes and wri tten
in seven languages: Hebrew, Samaritan, Chaldean, Greek,
Syriac, Latin and
Arabic. It is a true monument of the publishing business
which, one must not forget, does credit to three Lebanese
scholars, students of the Maronite School of Rome, who
actively took part in its publication: Gibraïl Al Sahyuni
known as Gabriel Sionite, Yuhanna Al Hasrouni known as Jean
Hesronite and Ibrahim Al Haqlani known as Abraham
Ecchellensis. |

Communicating
with the library, the donor's office kept as it was, with
the same furniture, Nicolas Sursock's personal objects and
his huge portrait painted in the thirties by Kees Van Dongen.
Melkite icons of the 18th and the 19th centuries also took
refuge in it, next to some Greek icons that |
| were
part of the Sursock collection. The office, library and
lounge perpetuate the atmosphere of intimacy characteristic
of the building, designed for enjoyable living. |
