The Setting up in
1977 of a department dedicated to the "Archives of Lebanese
painters and sculptors" enhanced the work of the Sursock
Museum in favor of contemporary arts. These archives, that the
museum undertook to build up, consist of visual and literary
documents that were searched for, sorted out and photographed in
the studios of the painters and the sculptors, on the premises of
their individual exhibitions, in the collections of their friends,
as well as in private collections.
The artists' itineraries were thus stored in
cases and files that are being enriched with new creations. Open
to the public, the archives of the museum offer a precious source
of information to all those who are committed to Lebanese art
field. In addition, a program of work is under way to transfer all
these archives to electronic platforms in order to facilitate
their use.
