Baalbeck International Festival 2001 Program

with the support of L'Oréal and Libancell

The Three First Performances of the Baalbeck International Festival 

On April 25th, 2001 the Baalbeck International Festival will start selling the tickets for the first three performances of the year 2001: "Abu Tayeb Al Mutanabbi" a musical by Mansour Rahbani, the concert by Sting, and "Clavigo" performed by the Paris Opera Ballet. 

All performances start at 8:00 pm

Thursday 5, Friday 6 and Saturday July 7.

 “Abu Tayeb Al Mutanabbi”, a musical by Mansour Rahbani .

It is a super production inspired by the life of the famous Arab poet Abu Tayeb Al Mutannabi, and performed by great artists such as Ghassan Saliba, Carole Samaha, Jamal Sleiman and Sabbah Obeid. Joining them, more than 100 dancers and participants. Elias Rahbani, Ghady Rahbani and Oussama Rahbani participated on the composition of the music, and Marwan Rahbani is directing the play.

Friday July 13 and Saturday July 14,

Sting in concert (pop-rock)

Sting is one of the greatest pop-rock.These two concerts in Baalbeck are part of his wold tour « Brand New Day », the title of his last album with the participation of Cheb Mami, Stevie Wonder and James Taylor. Sting will be singing his classical hits : « Desert Rose», « Englishman in New York », « Russians », as well as songs from Police, such as « Roxane » and « Message in a Bottle ». 

Friday July 20 and Saturday July 21

The Paris Opera Ballet will perform « Clavigo » a ballet by Roland Petit which is inspired by Goethe’s play by the same name. In it, the famous choreographer Roland Petit tells the story of an unhappy love…Our compatriote Gabriel Yared, awardee of an Oscar and numerous international prizes, had composed the music for the ballet, and the scenography is by Jean-Michel Wilmotte. Nicolas Le Riche who is the star dancer at the Paris Opera , will wonderfully  interpret the seductor who mesmerises and seduces the sweet and passionate Clairemarie Osta.
This ballet has been created in 1999 for the Paris Opera Ballet and performed at the Palais Garnier . It will be performed for the first time at the Baalbeck International Festival, and will be reproduced at the Palais Garnier in the year 2002.
This important cultural event is part of the Francophonie activities in Lebanon.

Other events for the 2001 Festival will be announced at a later date.
