ELTON
JOHN

Elton John
is, quite simply, the world’s leading popular
musician.
Elton John had already been the top star of the
seventies and had sustained his stature in the
eighties, but the nineties were remarkable even by his
standards. First came the phenomenal success of THE
LION KING soundtrack, which outsold every other album
on the planet in the year 1994.
These achievements joined a long list of astonishing
accomplishments from this past decade. Elton John had
already been the top star of the seventies and had
sustained his stature in the eighties, but nineties
were remarkable even by his standards. First came the
phenomenal success of THE LION KING soundtrack,
which outsold every other album on the planet in the
year 1994. The animated Disney Classic, was the number
one cinema smash of the year. Can You Feel The Love
Tonight, Circle Of Life and Hakuna
Matata became world hits and Elton John won his
first Oscar. A stage adaptation of the musical opened
on Broadway in the autumn of 1997. True to Elton's
recent form, this was no mere conventional success.
THE LION KING was immediately Broadway's
hottest ticket and proved a multiple Tony Award
winner. It is still the show to see in 2001 not only
in New York but also in London, where it opened at the
Lyceum in 1999.
Elton John has also led the BILLBOARD Hot 100 with
more chums than any other artist. Of his nine American
number or singles, three are collaborations, each from
a different decade. “ Don’t Go Breaking My
Heart” with Kiki Dee was the world’s number one
single in 1976, “ That’s What Friends Are For “
teamed Dionne Warwick with Elton. Gladys Knight and
Stevie Wonder in 1985, and live recording” Don’t
Let The SUN Go Down On Me “ by George Michael and
Elton went number one in both US and UK in 1991.
Live work helped establish Elton John as the leading
solo star in America since the mid-1970s. From the
moment he kicked back the piano bench and played the
conclusion of “Burn Down The Mission”, Elton
has been an intensively visual life performer, famous
for his often-outrageous costumes and flamboyant stage
behavior. In early 1999, he received the People’s
Choice Entertainer of All-Time award in the United
States.
This artist has been major star for thirty years not
only because of his great gift but because he is an
outstanding spirit.
