In Pleasantville, USA,
there has never been any rain. There has never been hatred, aggression
or tears. In Pleasantville, USA, there has never been a passionate
kiss. There has never been a flat tire, a red rose or a work
of art. Until now.
In Gary Ross’ daring
modern fairy tale Pleasantville, an entire fictional town is
granted a chance to experience the comedies. In this
fantastical adventure, two late 20th Century teenagers
accidentally bring living color to a mysterious suburb trapped
in a black-and-white 50’s utopia--and set of a
revolution.
For the first time,
Pleasantville citizen are about to experience a world of
sensuous delights, diverse desires, and frightening
unpredictability. They will experience the

terror of violence and the wonder of love. They
will never view life as black-and-white again. Combining
cutting-edge computer technology with comedy and fableistic
storytelling, Pleasantville is a wildly imaginative and wholly
original tale that poses interesting questions about
contemporary life.
Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon
star as twin siblings from a typical, broken 90’s family.
Through a mysterious chain of events, they find themselves
trapped in an alternate reality where basketballs always go
in, the thermometer always reads 72, the bathrooms have no
toilets and sex just doesn’t exist. But the teenagers have
also brought an unexpected-- and double-edged -- gift to
Pleasantville: a sense of possibility that spreads like
wildfire throughout the town. There can be no turning back
once the citizen begin experiencing such strange wonders as
sex, art, rain, and ideas.
Soon, the town undergoes an
astonishing transformation, slowly turning from
black-and-white to Technicolor. First, it is a red rose, a
blade of green grass, a shiny new car. A tongue turns pink,
eyes turn hazel... Flesh tones shock and with their beauty.
Pleasantville becomes divided -- life for the first time with
stark differences as it attempts to grasp the Kaleidoscopic
new world before it.
With the creation of Pleasantville,
filmmaker Gary Ross boldly turns the classic concept of Oz
onto its head. The result is a unique cinematic experience
that defies categorization. Pleasantville is a darkly serious
comedy, a funny celebration of life, an intimate drama and an
inventive fairy tale.
Starring Tobey Maguire, Jeff Daniels,
Joan Allen, William H. Macy, J.T. Walsh, and Reese
Witherspoon, this New Line Cinema production marks the
directorial debut of two-time Oscar - naminated screenwriter
Gary Ross( Big Dave).
To help him bring Pleasantville to
life, Ross assembled an extraordinary creative team including
production designer Jeannine Oppewell ( honored last year with
an Oscar nomination for L.A. Confidential) cinematographer
John Lindley; costume designer Judianna Makovsky, (who also
worked on Big); and renowned American recording artist and
composer Randy Newman providing an original score. |
