Henry VIIIs wife, has been unable to produce an heir to the throne.
Henry (ROBERT
SHAW), Having fallen in love with Anne Boleyne, asks the Pope to grant him a divorce. The
king is backed by everyone except the highly regarded Sir Thomas
More (Paul Scofield). When
Cardinal Wolsey (Orson Welles), Chancellor of England, names More as his successor, it
becomes increasingly important for Henry to get Mores support. But More cannot be
swayed. Henry demands the clergy to renounce the Pope and to name him the head of the
church of England.
Cromwell (Leo Mekern), leader of the divorce campaign, frames More,
forcing him to resign as Chancellor. Eventually, More is brought to trial, found guilty of
treason, and be headed. |
