One
of
the
bets
of
Musica
Alternativa
is
naturally
on
Portuguese
music,
or
should
we
say
on
Portuguese
music
that
can
be
alternative.
Fado
is
a
national
kind
of
song,
a
kind
of
Portuguese
blues
that
had
in
Lady
Amália
Rodrigues
its
exponent
both
inside
Portugal
and
worldwide.
However,
Fado
has
also
been
in
the
minds
and
ears
of
younger
artists
who
dream
of
giving
Fado
a
much
needed
re-styling.
That's
why
we
signed
in
the
summer
of
2002
António
Zambujo,
a
young
talented
"fadista"
(singer
of
Fado)
who
came
to
the
nation's
attention
with
his
singing
and
acting
in
the
musical
"Amália"
that
drew
to
the
Politeama
theatre
in
Lisbon,
two
million
ticket
payers
since
2000.
António
Zambujo
played
the
role
of
Francisco
da
Cruz,
the
first
husband
of
celebrated
"cantadeira"
(female
singer
of
Fado)
Amália
Rodrigues,
the
center
figure
of
the
musical
play.
Zambujo
started
singing
very
early,
initially
with
family
and
friends
until
winning
his
first
contest
at
the
age
of
sixteen;
he
was
born
in
Beja,
capital
city
of
Lower
Alentejo,
the
very
special
province
of
Portugal
that
originates
the
peculiar
kind
of
Arabian
roots
male
singing,
generally
called
"
Sings
"
that
interests
anthropologists
from
all
over
the
world.
He
came
to
Lisbon
and
was
featured
in
the
"Clube
do
Fado"
until
being
recruited
to
the
cast
of
musical
play
"Amália".
Recently
Antonio
Zambujo
was
awarded
with
"best
new
Fado
singer"
organized
by
national
radio
Central
FM
and
has
his
first
solo
album
ready
for
release.
What
distinguishes
Zambujo
from
other
fado
singers
is
his
love
for
tradition
together
with
his
will
to
innovate
such
a
popular
classic
style.
In
the
album
"O
mesmo
Fado"
("The
same
Fado"
or
if
you
wish
'the
same
fate',
such
is
the
meaning
of
word
fado)
Zambujo
uses
new
lyrics
to
some
musical
basic
tracks
from
traditional
Fado
tunes
that
are
the
stuff
of
Fado
history,
like
Fado
Anadia,
Fado
Maria
Rita
or
Fado
das
Mágoas.
The
album
even
includes
"Trago
Alentejo
na
voz"
("I
carry
Alentejo
in
my
voice")
which
courageously
mixes
Fado
with
Cante,
including
one
of
those
fabulous
voice
groups
from
the
original
province.
With
the
fairly
recent
renewal
of
the
'Fado
scene'
in
Portugal
that
includes
a
lot
of
new
blood
like
Mariza,
Camané,
Mafalda
Arnaut,
the
path
is
clear
for
young
singer
António
Zambujo
to
become
a
household
name
and
a
potential
winner
abroad,
bringing
new
life
to
a
national
song
with
so
much
history
and
much
more
feeling.
For
him
the
future
is
now.
