The Lebanese Parliament and the United Nations Development Program in Lebanon this week signed a protocol agreement aimed at boosting and developing computerization in the house and preparing it to host parliamentary conferences.
In parliament, House Speaker Nabih Berri and the head of the Council for Development and Reconstruction Mahmud Othman signed the protocol with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Lebanon Yves de San.
Deputy Mohammed Abdel Hamid Beydoun, who attended the signing, said the project costs around $500,000. He added that the project aims at boosting relations between the Lebanese parliament and world parliaments.
The Lebanese capital this week hosted the first Lebanese-Brazilian plastic surgery meeting which was held over three days at the Portemilio Hotel in Kaslik.
The conference gave a chance for both Lebanese and Brazilian plastic surgeons to meet and exchange views, information and expertise. The meetings also aimed at updating Lebanese surgeons on the latest techniques and advances in the field.
The conference tackled different specialization areas in plastic surgery including face lifts, nose jobs and breast surgery. Lebanese and Brazilian surgeons also discussed ways to prepare patients psychologically to the possible outcome of a plastic surgery they might undergo.
Health Minister Karam Karam, representing President Emil Lahhoud, this week opened the ninth conference of the Syndicate of Lebanese Dentists at the UNESCO Palace in Beirut.
In his speech, Minister Karam reaffirmed that the ministry seeks to provide all Lebanese citizens with the best medical services. He also stressed the importance of ensuring citizens with the "Health Card" soon.
The conference coincides with the syndicate's golden jubilee. It was attended by Deputy Suleiman Kanaan, representing House Speaker Nabih Berri, and Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Michel Moussa, representing Prime Minister Salim Al-Hoss.
In an effort to promote volunteerism in the country, a round table discussion was held in Beirut to suggest ways the phenomenon can be encouraged in this country.
Participants in the discussion stressed the high need for volunteers in Lebanon even on a part-time basis. They also suggested staging media events, creating incentives and even a market for volunteers in Lebanon.
The meeting, hosted by the UN House in downtown Beirut, also addressed preparations for the Volunteer's Day on December 5 and for the Year of Volunteers scheduled for 2001.
A Pakistani economic delegation this week held talks in Beirut over the chances of enhancing bilateral trade between the two countries. Last year, Lebanon imported goods worth some $12.8 million from Pakistan, while Lebanese exports to Pakistan amounted to just $3.7 million.
The five-member delegation, headed by Pakistani Minister of Export Promotion Wajid Jawad, held meetings with Economy Minister Nasser Al-Saiidi, Finance Minister George Qorom and officials at the Beirut Chamber of Commerce and the Lebanese Industrialists Association.
The Pakistani delegation's main area of interest is the construction, food and textile sectors. Their visit also aimed at strengthening links between businessmen in both countries and encouraging bilateral investments.
Lebanon is taking part in the 46th International Trade Fair in Damascus that was inaugurated last weekend. Lebanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Nasser Al-Saiidi, who attended the opening, hoped that more agreements would be signed between Lebanon and Syria to increase the level of bilateral trade.
Saiidi inaugurated the 280-square meter Lebanese pavilion, where around 45 Lebanese companies are exhibiting products ranging from food to cables, electrical equipment, paints and tobacco. Companies from 34 countries are taking part in the 10-day fair.
The northern town of Ehden is currently hosting a three-week summer festival presenting visitors with a variety of attractions and activities.
The festival includes a fashion show of traditional Lebanese costumes, a mobile photography exhibition, two children plays and a variety of concerts.
The Ehden Municipality and the Association of Lebanese Painters and Sculptors are also organizing an art exhibition featuring the work of some 120 renowned and young Lebanese artists.
For the fifth year in a row, Lebanon's Podium Agency organized its "beauty night" to elect five candidates competing in different beauty categories.
Christina Sawaya won the title "Model of the Year 1999", while Eliane Nassrallah and Christel Hoch were elected as first and second runner-ups. The "Man of the Year 1999" title was awarded to Antoine Hnein, with Dany Jenzerly and Elie Mansour as first and second runner-ups.
The contest's ten judges also elected Muriel Hwayyek for blonde, Randa Keyrouz for brunette, Lina Harb for face and Jennifer Srour for teen. The Podium Agency's beauty night was held at the Joseph Khoury Marina in Dbayyeh.
