Prime minister Rafik Al-Hariri who arrived late last night from Tehran today held talks with interior minister Michel Al-Murr in Koraytem. They held talks on the draft municipal and mayoral election law especially in light of a vote by joint-parliamentary committees on the principle of appointment. Hariri discussed development and economic projects in the North and Tripoli with deputy Moriss Fadel. He also met deputies Mansour Ghanem Al-Bonn and Nuhad Saeyd. They held talks on recent developments in the country.
Hizbullah today said one of its guerrillas Mahmoud Hassan Al-Bourji was killed today in South Lebanon. Hizbullah did not provide details on the death which raised to 64 the number of guerrillas killed in South Lebanon so far this year. Hizbullah said its fighters attacked this morning the post of Soujod, which is held by Israeli troops and their allied militia in the South. Meanwhile, Israeli shells today fell on the outskirts of Kafra and Yater and on Mazraat Okmata.
The US ambassador to Lebanon Richard Jones today held talks with officials in North Lebanon on economic and development issues. Jones held talks with former prime minister Omar Karami. After the meeting, Jones said he hoped US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's peace efforts would yield good results towards achieving progress in the deadlocked Middle East peace process. Jones added any progress in talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians would certainly reflect positively on the Lebanese and Syrian tracks, stressing the importance of dialogue in reaching desired goals.
Jones also met the Governor of the North Khalil Al-Hindi. The American ambassador said he discussed the outcome of the Islamic summit in Tehran describing its recommendations as satisfactory to all parties. Jones also visited the chamber of commerce and industry in the North. Later, Jones held talks with Health Minister Suleiman Franjieh in Zgharta in the presence of deputy Fayez Ghosson. Talks focused on bilateral issues and recent developments in the region.
