What are the requirements for driving vehicles in Lebanon ?


Definition of the Internal Security Forces and determination of their missions .

The Internal Security Forces are general armed forces whose prerogatives cover all the Lebanese territory and its regional waters and airspace . As for their missions , they are specified as follows :

1 - In the field of the administrative police :

The Internal Security Forces are submitted to the authority of the minister of the Interior , and they comply with the provisions of the military laws and regulations with the exceptions determined by virtue of other laws and regulations .

The Units are organized as follows :

  1. General Staff : Includes Bureaus in charge of preparing studies and giving advises to the Director General .

  2. Central Administration : Includes administrative and technical Sections in charge of financial , supplies and equipment management of the Internal Security Forces and the buildings they own or dispose of .

  3. Social Services Administration : Includes the magazine of the I.S.F , private funds created by decrees for the I.S.F and departments related to these funds and clubs and other cultural , intellectual & social services .

  4. Territorial Gendarmery : Includes all sections operating out of Beirut except for those who are completely or partially connected to another unit .

  5. Mobile Battalion : is a general reserve force at I.S.F and is prepared - regarding its dimension , organization , equipments and training - for policing and establishing security in all of the Lebanese territory . It includes all mobile battalions based in and outside Beirut .

  6. Police of Beirut : Its prerogatives include the territory of Beirut city . It is formed of sections related to it except for those who completely or partially connected to another unit .

  7. Judiciary Police : Its prerogatives include all of the Lebanese territory and is formed of scientific and touristic Police and sections for crime repression , enquiries and investigations .

  8. Organism of Security of Embassies , Public administrations and Institutions : Its prerogatives include all of the Lebanese territory . It is formed of all sections in charge of diplomatic delegations guard in Lebanon , institutions related to them , as well as public administrations and Institutions .

  9. Institute of the I.S.F : Includes all colleges and schools of the Internal Security Forces and training Centers .

What are the requirements  for visitors to drive vehicles in Lebanon ?

Any foreigner is allowed to drive a vehicle in Lebanon , provided that he is in possession of either of the following licences :

  1. - An international driving licence for the categories of vehicles specified in the said licence .

  2. - A driving licence of the specimen figuring on the 9th annex of the International Convention on the Roads Transportations concluded in Geneva on 19-SEPT-1949.

  3. - A driving licence issued by his country of origin (checked and paraphed ) by the "Vehicle Service" Registration Office in Lebanon and that only when the foreigner is on vacation or on a touristic visit in Lebanon .

  4. - A driving licence issued by his country of origin when this country and Lebanon are bound with a special treaty such as : Jordan - Syria - Saudi Arabia - Iraq - The United Arab Emirates etc...

However , it is noted that the International driving licence , as well as the driving licence figuring on the 9th annex of the international convention on Roads Transportations could be exchanged into a Lebanese driving licence .
